Vancomycin inhibits gram positive, Amphotericin inhibits contaminating fungi while other enteric bacteria are inhibited by Trimethoprim, Cefsulodin inhibits Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Sheep blood permits the detection of haemolysis and also provides haeme (X factor) which is required for the growth of Helicobacter species.
