It stimulates proliferation and survival of endothelial cells and promotes angiogenesis and vascular permeability. Murine Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) is a disulfide linked homo-dimeric glycoprotein. It is a potent growth and angiogenic cytokine. It exerts its effect via 2 high affinity binding receptors VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2. These receptors are expressed exclusively on endothelial cells. It stimulates proliferation and survival of endothelial cells and promotes angiogenesis and vascular permeability. VEGF has been shown to have a very profound mitogenic effect on cultured endothelial cells. It also promotes endothelial cell migration and sprouting and can be used as a component of growth medium for endothelial cell culturing.
