Magnesium plays an important role in enzymology, muscle cell physiology and in nucleic acid structure. Magnesium is an essential cofactor for many enzymes, e.g. DNase, restriction enzymes EcoRI and EcoRV and RNase H. It is also used for prpearation and propagation of bacteriophage lambda.
