20X SSC (Saline Sodium Citrate) is extensively used as in molecular biology as a hybridization and transfer buffer. 20X SSC buffer has a high ionic strength as it contains Sodium chloride and it utilizes citrate as the buffering system. This buffer is used in DNA and RNA probecontaining hybridization cocktails and to control stringency for washing steps of Southern and Northern blotting.
