Recommended for detection and enumeration of Enterococci by membrane filtration. Enterococci and Group D Streptococci exhibit esculin hydrolysis. Esculin is hydrolysed to esculetin and dextrose, which reacts with ferric citrate producing brownish black precipitate. Sodium azide renders selectivity to the medium.
