Propidium iodide is a laboratory reagent for the fluorescent staining of nucleic acids. Propidium iodide is useful for flow cytometry for staining apoptotic cells and nuclei. Because Propidium iodide is membrane impermeable the state of the cell determines the ability of propidium iodide from staining viable and apoptotic cells.
